9/11 Remembrance Events, 'Nun Run,' City Council Scheduled

City residents will be able to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks by donating blood, attending a performance at the Portsmouth Public Library and an Interfaith service at Strawbery Banke on Sunday.

Like much of the nation, Portsmouth residents will have several opportunities to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as well as other civic affairs.

Although all city offices, the indoor pool and the Portsmouth Public Library are closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday, The annual "Nun Run" 5K to benefit the St. Charles Children's Home in Rochester is happening on Monday morning at Pease International Tradeport at 9 a.m. Also, the signing of the 1905 Portsmouth Peace Treaty will be celebrated with music and a bell ringing ceremony in Market Square at 3:47 p.m., the actual time the treaty that ended the Russ-Japanese War was signed.

On Tuesday, the Portsmouth City Council will hold its first regular meeting in September. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at City Hall and is open to the public.

On Thursday evening, the Portsmouth Public Library will present a performance by artist Alexandra Borrie titled, "9/11 Tribute at Dusk," in the Levenson Room at 7 p.m. Borrie lived in Queens, N.Y., at the time of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

On Friday, the annual WOKQ and American Red Cross blood drive will be held at the Frank Jones Center on Route One from 12 noon to 6 p.m. In honor of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11, the event is being called the "Day of Remembrance" blood drive.

On Sunday, Strawbery Banke Museum will host a 9/11 remembrance Interfaith service at 6 p.m. Clergy from all of the city's religious faiths are going to be represented at the event that will also feature music performed by the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, among others. It is open to the public and the organizers held a similar event after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks occurred.
