'Angels and Reapers' Highlights Fun Weekend

The Music Hall and Seacoast Repertory Theatre provide live performances; Discover Portsmouth and Portsmouth Public Library offer great art and cultural exhibits.

As most city residents know, there is never a shortage of fun things to do or places to go in Portsmouth. Each Thursday, we will offer five suggestions for people who are planning out their weekends.

1. See "Angel Reapers": The Music Hall will present Martha Clarke's "Angel Reapers" on Saturday at 8 p.m. This a lively song and dance piece was inspired by the life of Ann Lee, founder of the Shaker movement.

2. Music Hall benefit: Summer House Furnishings in Rye will host a Sip and Shop benefit for the Music Hall on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Patrons can shop for home furnishings and enjoy refreshments with 10 percent of the proceeds going to the Music Hall.

3. Discover Portsmouth Center: The Discover Portsmouth Center on Middle Street is always a great place for families to learn more about the city's history and cultural heritage.

4. Library art exhibit: “Shelter,” a juried art show hanging in the Library’s Levenson Room, will continue this month. Come celebrate the work of 14 area artists: Shawn Pelech, Montana Sky Jabre, Jane Sutherland, Andrea Williams, Catherine DiPentima, Deborah Barry, Rick Dirck, Eva Powers, Maddi Alana, Barbara Weismann, Barbara Adams, Tess Feltes, Arthur Goodman Copeman and Stevie Fremeau.

5. "Cabaret" at The Rep: Set against the backdrop of pre-World War II, the show takes place inside a provocative, yet forbidden Kit Kat Klub, where the relationship between cabaret performer Sally Bowles and the handsome American Cliff Bradshaw flourishes only to face social taboos and the imminent rise of the Nazi Party. Shows are Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre on Bow Street. Click here to buy tickets.
