Chief Michael P. Maloney Memorial Patrol Room Dedicated

Gov. John Lynch joins Greenland Police Department, several law enforcement agencies and Maloney's family and friends at Friday morning ceremony.

Gov. John Lynch, Greenland Police officers and law enforcement officers from across the state officially dedicated the Chief Michael P. Maloney Memorial Patrol Room on Friday morning.

Greenland Police Chief Tara Laurent said thanks to the hard work of the Portsmouth Rotary Club and the generosity of several Portsmouth area businesses, the department now has a new patrol room that embodies Maloney's spirit and his love for the department and the community he served.

Laurent said the oil portrait of Maloney painted by Arlene Kelley of Maine that is displayed in the new patrol room will serve as a constant reminder that "he will be with us always."

Laurent said businesses such as Target, Lowe's and Walmart donated the computers and flat-screen television inside the new patrol room. The hallway that leads to the new patrol room is also filled with black and white photographs of Maloney's funeral that were taken by Rebecca Garone, daughter of Derry Police Chief Edward Garone.

"We appreciate the donations from the bottom of our hearts," said Laurent.

at the home of Cullen Mutrie on 517 Post Road in Greenland. Authorities determined that Mutrie and his ex-girlfriend, Brittany Tibbetts, were running a drug trafficking operation from the home. When Maloney and four other police officers with the New Hampshire Attorney General's Drug Task Force attempted to execute a warrant on the front porch, Mutrie opened fire and killed Maloney and wounded four police officers.

Instead of having a chaplain bless the new patrol room, Laurent said it was more fitting for the police officers, Maloney's family members and community members present to dedicate the patrol room with the qualities that Maloney cared about the most: integrity, honesty, pride, teamwork, genuine friendship, dedication and a love for family. "This is what Mike was all about," she added.

Gov. John Lynch stood with Laurent and Peg Maloney, the wife of Chief Maloney.

"It is my fervent hope that everyone who enters that room and the generation that follows will remember Mike Maloney because he was such a good guy," Lynch said. "He was a hero not only to all of us, but to people all over New Hampshire."

Nearly six months to the day that Maloney was killed, New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney said, "The emotion of that day is still so raw."

Delaney said the new patrol room will serve as an inspiration for the police officers who serve Greenland now and those who will follow in their foot steps.

"Mike's example will define the work of the police officers that work here forever," he said.

Portsmouth Rotary Club President Nancy Notis said her group was pleased that they could help the Greenland Police Department after they came up with the idea to refurbish the former patrol room in Maloney's honor. Laurent said Maloney designed the Greenland Police Station building before it was built in 2003 and "it was his baby."

Laurent explained that the Portsmouth Rotary Club did most of the fundraising and hired Ricci Lumber of Portsmouth to do the new flooring, lighting, electrical work. Advance Construction did the new countertops.

Notis said the project was a perfect fit for the Portsmouth Rotarians because the one value that the club shares with Maloney is "service above self."

Peg Maloney said very few words when she took the podium, but she said she and her family are extremely grateful for everything the community and the state has done to honor her husband's legacy.

"Thank you, God bless, and life will go on," she said.
