Five Things to Do This Weekend

Brewfest at Redhook on Saturday, New Hampshire Film Festival runs through Sunday.

As most city residents know, there is never a shortage of fun things to do or places to go in Portsmouth. Each Thursday, we will offer five suggestions for people who are planning out their weekends.

1. Brewfest at Redhook: On Saturday, Redhook Ale Brewery at Pease International Tradeport will host the New Hampshire Brew Fest, where patrons can sample craft beers brewed all over New England. For a fee of $25 per person in advance or $35 per person at the door, patrons enjoy as much beer as they like from 1 to 4 p.m. while supporting the Prescott Park Arts Festival.

2. The New Hampshire Film Festival: The film festival started today with New Hampshire Day and Night, but it continues through Sunday, with all sorts of films, workshops and parties. Get your tickets here, and be sure to check back on Portsmouth Patch for wall-to-wall coverage of each day of the festival.

3. Marching Band Show: The Portsmouth High School Clipper Marching Band will host a Maine Band Directors' Association Marching Band Show on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Portsmouth High School football field. Seven high school marching bands from Central and Southern Maine, including Leavitt, Westbrook, South Portland, Old Orchard, Wells, Sanford and Marshwood, will join Portsmouth in a quest for a rating of five stars in nine different performance categories. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. For more information, visit www.clipperband.org or contact Eric Gagnon at 436-7100.

4. Library Reception: The Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library will hold a reception Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m., with the artists exhibiting their work in “Shelter,” a juried art show hanging in the Library’s Levenson Room this month. Come celebrate the work of 14 area artists: Shawn Pelech, Montana Sky Jabre, Jane Sutherland, Andrea Williams, Catherine DiPentima, Deborah Barry, Rick Dirck, Eva Powers, Maddi Alana, Barbara Weismann, Barbara Adams, Tess Feltes, Arthur Goodman Copeman and Stevie Fremeau. 5. "Cabaret" at The Rep: Set against the backdrop of pre-World War II, the show takes place inside a provocative, yet forbidden Kit Kat Klub, where the relationship between cabaret performer Sally Bowles and the handsome American Cliff Bradshaw flourishes only to face social taboos and the imminent rise of the Nazi Party. Shows are Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre on Bow Street. Click here to buy tickets.
