Five Things You Need to Know Today, May 2

City Council to look at police, fire budgets; Portsmouth Farmers Market to return; some showers in the forecast.

1. Today's weather: The National Weather Service is calling for a slight chance of showers before 11 a.m. Cloudy, with a high near 53. East wind around 7 mph. On Wednesday night, it will be Cloudy, with a low around 44. East wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm.

2. City Council work session: The Portsmouth City Council will review the proposed fiscal year 2013 Portsmouth Police and Portsmouth Fire department budgets during a work session at City Hall on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

3. New exhibit at Strawbery Banke: A new exhibit titled, "Thread: Stories of Fashion at Strawbery Banke. 1740-2012” opens on Tuesday for the summer season. It will be staged in six of the museum's historic buildings and allows visitors to see how fashion has evolved over the last 300 years.

4. Vote in our Small Business Tournament: Voting in the 's 10th poll that asks Portsmouth residents to vote for the best hair salon/barber shop in the city until Friday at 9 a.m. There will be five more polls where Portsmouth residents will be asked to vote for their favorite businesses in different categories and the winners of these polls will then be pitted against one another until the city's best small business is ultimately chosen in July.

5. Portsmouth Farmers Market returns: The Portsmouth Farmers Market will debut for the 2012 summer season this Saturday at the City Municipal Complex parking lot. Seacoast Growers Association members will sell locally grown, organic food products through October.
