Iraqi War Veterans Parade in the Works

Request for a July 8 parade made during Monday's City Council meeting.

President Barack Obama brought home the last U.S. troops from Iraq before the end of 2011, officially ending the Iraq War and now some Portsmouth residents want to say thank you to those who served.

On Monday night, Peter Somsich and asked the City Council if they could hold a "Welcome Home, Iraqi Veterans" parade on July 8. Somsich said members of the parade committee also want the city to assume the costs involved with the police details and insurance.

Somsich said only St. Louis, Mo., has held a similar parade to thank Iraq War veterans for their service. He said New Hampshire and the Seacoast area in particular has many and family members who would appreciate such a parade.
