IMAGE GALLERY: Bridge Span Leaves Portsmouth

The barge carrying the bridge left the city on Wednesday.

The Cape Cod barge transported the Memorial Bridge lift span out of the city on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The barge took out a pier piling before it headed down river to begin its 18-hour journey to a metal recycling facility in the Greater Boston area in Massachusetts. A team of tugboats escorted the barge out of Portsmouth Harbor.

Hundreds of Portsmouth area residents watched the final float out from vantage points at Prescott Park in Portsmouth, Four Tree Island, Fort Constitution and Great Island Common before the barge made its way out to sea.
