VIDEO: NH PetSave Week Underway

Organizations hope to raise awareness, funds for shelters, vulnerable animals.

Gov. Maggie Hassan along with representatives from the 12 animal shelters that make up NH PetSave launched PetSave week this week, an effort to raise awareness about the work of the shelters, especially during lean economic times.

The shelters, which include the NHSPCA in Stratham, hope to get the public to focus on the work of the shelters and also get the shelters to work collaboratively. Between then, the shelters rescue more than 18,000 animals each year across the Granite State. This is the first effort of its kind in New Hampshire that the organizations of linked together to form the collaborative.

Participating organizations include the Concord-Merrimack County SPCA, the Animal Rescue Leagues of New Hampshire South – Bedford, the Humane Society for Greater Nashua, and the Salem Animal Rescue League, to name a few.

Part of the campaign includes a two-day fundraising effort on March 21, to focus on the needs of some of the more “vulnerable animals” in the state, according to the organization. It hopes that it will “transform how people support their local humane organizations.”

Hassan noted at the event that the family dog, Honey Mae, was adopted from the New Hampshire SPCA in Stratham, near her home in Exeter. The family took to Honey Mae, and Honey Mae took to them, she said, adding that she curled up right underneath her son’s wheelchair.

The event was attended by pet lovers – and pets – alike with mostly dogs attending. Heather Faria of the Concord-Merrimack County SPCA brought along a rabbit on a leash, to hang out at the event.
