The Memorial Bridge lift span departed Portsmouth Harbor on Wednesday afternoon for its final float out and is bound for a metal recycling facility in the Greater Boston area.

As hundreds of Portsmouth area residents watched at Prescott Park in Portsmouth and from Fort Constitution and Great Island Common in New Castle, the Memorial Bridge lift span and the barge that carried it made their way out to sea on Wednesday.

Along the way, everyone had one last chance to reflect on how much the Memorial Bridge had been a part of their lives. Much like the initial float out that occurred on Feb. 1, the final float out that happened Wednesday was just as memorable and historic.

According to New Hampshire Department of Transportation officials, the barge will transport the bridge to either the Quincy (Mass.) Shipyard or to Schnitzer Metal Recycling in Everett, Mass., where it will be cut into pieces and sold as scrap metal.

What follows is a video showing the final float out of the Memorial Bridge lift span.
