NH Adores its American Idol

Governor Hassan proclaimed May 10 'Alex Preston Day" in NH, in a celebration that expanded throughout the day for the Top 3 finalist.

Crowds on either side of Main Street in Durham swelled and then closed in as the convertible carrying Alex Preston and his family inched along in the American Idol homecoming parade Saturday. His mother leaned over, said something, and kissed him.

What did she say?

"She said, 'Can you believe this?'" Preston said before his free concert at the Whittemore Center at the University of New Hampshire.

"No," he said, recalling the moment during an interview. "I can't. It's absolutely insane."

On "Alex Preston Day" in New Hampshire, so proclaimed earlier in the day by Gov. Maggie Hassan at a ceremony in Mont Vernon, the American Idol finalist was treated to something of a hero's homecoming.

A parade, a proclamation and an entourage that expanded throughout Saturday reached its celebrity crescendo with the free concert at UNH.

Preston thanked his fans, from his hometown of Mont Vernon to UNH, where he spent a year before pursuing his music dreams. Preston made the American Idol top three May 8, and the grand finale is May 21 on FOX.

"Thank you," he said at a press conference. "It means so much to me. Awesome. It blew my mind."
