Judge to Decide Fate of Downtown Skating Rink
A group of South End residents argue it would negatively affect their quality of life.
The fate of a proposed skating rink at Strawbery Banke will be decided in court.
A group of South End residents is trying to get a judge to block the proposed "Puddle Dock Pond" rink, arguing the noise and lighting would negatively affect their quality of life.
Rink supporters have raised $10,000 to fight the group in court.
"Puddle Dock Pond will be a tastefully designed, temporary rink that complements the historic surroundings of the museum," said museum President Lawrence Yerdon in a statement. "It is consistent with the museum’s mission to offer a gathering place that encourages healthy and affordable skating for all ages."
The Zoning Board of Adjustment approved the rink in June. The South End residents want a judge to overturn the decision.
The case is expected to be heard in Rockingham County Superior Court Jan. 10
Supporters are trying to raise another $15,000 through an online fundraising campaign.
