First Allegiant Flights at Pease Launching Friday

Allegiant will be the first passenger airliner to fly out of Pease in five years.

Allegiant said its first passenger flights out of the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease will launch Friday.

Those flights were supposed to start last month, but they were rerouted to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. Allegiant said the furlough of TSA personnel during the government shutdown stalled the installation of passenger screening equipment at Pease.

Allegiant will run a single, nonstop flight from Pease to Orlando-Sanford International Airport in Florida. The first flight is scheduled to depart Pease Friday at 6:45 p.m.

Allegiant previously served Pease from 2005 to 2007. Pease has been without a passenger airliner since Skybus left in 2008.

Allegiant is an "ultra low-cost carrier." Its airplanes flying out of Portsmouth have no video screens or wireless Internet service. Introductory fares are $71 one way.

The head of the Pease Development Authority said he hopes Allegiant's return will lure other airlines to Portsmouth.
