New Memorial Bridge Open Date Not Yet Set

The lift-span style bridge was closed in 2011 for replacement.

No opening date has been set yet for the new Memorial Bridge connecting Portsmouth to Kittery, Maine.

The lift-span style bridge has been closed since 2011 after 88 years of service. The new, $89 million bridge is expected to open later this month.

The last piece of the bridge, the center lift span, was successfully floated in place on the Piscataqua River earlier this month. Crews have been raising and lowering the span for tests.

Carol Morris, a spokeswoman for the project, said an opening date could be released early next week.

A group has raised money to illuminate the bridge when it opens.
