Service Credit Union to Help Furloughed Workers

Portsmouth business will offer shipyard workers and New Hampshire Air National Guard members low interest loans and receive credit for direct deposits.

Just hours after more than 2,000 Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers and 450 New Hampshire Air National Guard members found out they were furloughed following the federal government shutdown, Service Credit Union stepped up to the plate.

In a press release, Lori Holmes, assistant vice president of marketing, said Service Credit Union will credit direct deposit for military and DoD government service (GS)  members affected by the government shutdown through its “Government Shutdown program.”

She explained that Service Credit Union’s Government Shutdown program automatically deposits the amount of military or DoD civilian government service (GS) pay into the member’s account, based on their last received direct deposit to the credit union.

“We wish to minimize and ensure that our military and DoD civilian members do not encounter any financial hardship, inconvenience and/or financial harm due to the government shutdown” says Gordon Simmons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union, in a prepared statement. “Service Credit Union is honored to support our loyal members with this safety net.”

Service Credit Union officials also said military and DoD civilian employees who are affected by the government shutdown, and are not members of Service Credit Union can open up an account with direct deposit of their net pay and qualify for future Government Shutdowns.

When the member’s DFAS direct deposit is received, the funds Service Credit Union deposited to the member’s account prior to receiving the actual funds will be automatically deducted from the member’s account by Service Credit Union.

Military and DoD government service (GS) employees who do not have an account nor are currently sending their direct deposit to Service Credit Union may apply for a low 4.9 percent “Government Shutdown loan” online, by phone or in branch.
