Smuttynose Begins Brewing at New Facility

The first test batch began on Monday.

Smuttynose Brewing Co.'s new facility in Hampton achieved a major milestone on Monday when brewing began on the first batch of beer at the new Towle Farm location.

It was only a test batch, but it's a sign that the new brewery is nearing full operation.

"Mash #1 is in the mixer!" Smuttynose posted on Facebook Monday morning. "Though the fate of this beer is unknown, it's our first brew at Towle Farm and a great chance to try out all our new equipment- brewhouse, centrifuge and bottling line."

Smuttynose spokesman JT Thompson said everything is now in place, and if all goes well with the test it won't be long before some aspects of the company's brewing operation are moved to the Hampton site. Until then, brewing will also continue at the Portsmouth location.

It's still going to be some time until the new brew pub slated for the Towle Farm site opens, however. Thompson said Smuttynose is looking at a late summer/early fall opening at this point.
