Roy was a Vietnamese linguist in the Army.

Stephen Thomas Roy, a preservation contractor who lived in Portsmouth, died Dec. 28 at the age of 66. The cause was complications from a stroke, according to his obituary.

Roy graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1965. He served two tours of duty as a Vietnamese linguist in the Army. He also worked for many years as a preservation contractor with Dave Adams, his friend and business partner.

"Steve was a storyteller, mentor, reluctant soldier, occasional guitar picker, unabashed liberal, preservationist, world traveler, voracious reader, lifelong learner, devoted and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, yet never better than as a grandfather," his obituary reads. "He'll be missed by many, forgotten by none."
