Friends, Family 'Heartbroken' by Rye Student's Death

The Portsmouth High School hockey team paid tribute to the Seacoast native on Saturday by putting his initials on their helmets and sticks.

Friends, family and former teachers and coaches are remembering John Durkin of Rye as an inspiration to others and someone whose high character set an example for those around him.

Durkin, 21, a student at Bates College, was found dead this week in Italy, where he was studying abroad as part of the Trinity College Program in Rome. Authorites there say he died after he was hit by a train.

"John’s commitment to excellence in all phases of his life was inspirational to the other members of the squad and a major factor in the team’s success over the past three years," said Mark Harriman, Durkin's football coach at Bates College.

Gov. Maggie Hassan said on Twitter that she was "deeply saddened" by the news of Durkin's passing.

Because the search for the missing student was publicized on social media, many people took to Twitter and Facebook to offer their condolences on Saturday once it was learned that Durkin had been found dead.

Locally, Rye resident Bridget Hughes suggested in a Facebook post that fellow residents should show their "love and support" for the Durkin family by lighting a candle on Sunday night, either in a window or at the end of their driveway, and also keep their front lights on all week in John's memory. "Light up Rye," she wrote.

The Portsmouth High School hockey team put the initials "JD" in tape on the back of their helmets as well as "RIP JD" on their sticks for their game on Saturday as a tribute to the Seacoast native.

"Heartbroken, so sorry for your loss. Truly the toughest football player on the field. Prayers to your family," wrote Tracey Smith on a Facebook page set up by Durkin's cousin earlier this week after Durkin went missing.

"I am terribly sorry for the Durkin family's loss. I feel very fortunate to have known him. John was such an easy going guy. We shared lots of laughs together. He talked about school and football a lot, but his main topic was his big family. He loved his family. I can't imagine your loss. My heart goes out to you all," said Sara Langmaid.

"My prayers are with all of you at this time. I taught John and his sibling elementary PE. Wonderful family - holding you all in our prayers," said Holly Warden.

"I was so deeply saddened to hear this. Growing up with John I got to know a great kid. It is tragic his life was cut so short. My sincerest condolences are with you all," said David Blass.

"I grew up with John in Rye, he was in many of my classes and I have only fond memories of this gifted, athletic, and kind person. My heart goes out to the Durkin family... Sending love and prayers to you all at this time," wrote Lindsey Marie.

"I'm in absolute shock and sadness, John was a great, smart, and just an all around good kid. We will all miss you John," wrote Whitney Leary.

"I can't even express my sadness for such a wonderful family...and incredible kid. I pray that your faith and family help you through this horrific time. We love you," wrote Elizabeth Hannan Fregeau.

People from around the world took to Twitter to express their condolences as well.

"Rest in peace, John Durkin. All my thoughts and prayers are with your friends and family. God bless! #RIPJohnDurkin" Tweeted Jordana Balsam.

"my heart goes out to the family of John Durkin and Bates college," said Courtney Jachna.

"there truly is an indescribable bond between study abroad students..my thoughts & prayers are with the family & friends of John Durkin," said Brianna Holm.

"i never knew anyone who even knew john durkin, but i am deeply saddened by his death. way too young," said Devin Kelley.

"Still in complete shock. RIP John Durkin," said Adam Kukesh.
