Police formed the HIDIT in order to target street and mid-level drug dealers operating in the city to crack down on those who profit from the addictions of others, according to Corey F. MacDonald, Esq., the deputy chief of police. Ireland, he alleged, was a drug dealer in Portsmouth and was targeted for that reason.

“Portsmouth Police continue in their multi-pronged effort to combat opiate addiction and dealing in the city,” MacDonald said.

In order to combat the problem, police set up an amnesty box earlier this month. A community access to recovery event will be scheduled for September at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. School resource officers will continue in their efforts this fall “to provide children in our community with positive and honest messages regarding illicit and prescription drug dangers,” stated MacDonald.

MacDonald also requested that residents reach out to police when and if they had information about potential drug dealing in the community, either by calling detectives directly or by posting information with Seacoast Crime Stoppers.
