Bridge Damage Estimated at $2.5 Million

Work has already begun on the costly repairs.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation announced Thursday that the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge sustained an estimated $2.5 million in damage when it was struck by a tanker earlier this week.

The repairs are expected to take four weeks to complete. Cianbro of Pittsfield, Maine has already begun working on steel fabrication, staging and mobilization, according to NHDOT.

"We are confident the Long Bridge can be repaired and reopened," NHDOT spokesman William Boynton said in a statement.

The Harbour Feature tanker from Madeira, Portugal slammed into the bridge around 1:30 p.m. Monday after a mooring line snapped at the New Hampshire State Pier. The bridge is closed to motor vehicle traffic, but its lift span remains operational to allow vessel traffic on the Piscataqua River throughout the repair period.
