Another Bridge in Portsmouth to Close for Replacement

Maplewood Avenue Bridge, which is on NH's infamous "Red List," closes July 7.

The Maplewood Avenue Bridge over the Route 1 bypass will close July 7 as part of a replacement project.

The closure will involved detours – as outlined in green in the attached map from the city of Portsmouth and the state Department of Transportation.

The span is one of several in the Seacoast on the Red List, the list for bridges most in need of rehabilitation or replacement.

The bridge replacement is to be completed by the fall of 2015 at a projected cost of $4.6 million, according to the state's 10-year plan.

DOT projects underway in Portsmouth include the replacement of the Middle Road and Islington Street bridges over the Route 1 bypass; the Middle Road span is complete, while the Islington Street span is expected to be open by the end of 2014.

The Route 1A bridge over Sagamore Creek is closed for replacement and it is expected to be open in December 2014.
