Mayor Urges Support for KC-46A Tanker

The U.S. Air Force will hold a hearing on March 6 at Portsmouth City Hall.

Submitted by the Office of the Mayor:

Portsmouth Mayor Robert J. Lister is encouraging the public to attend a hearing hosted by U.S. Air Force staff on the new KC-46A refueling tanker. The Pease Air National Guard Base is set to receive the tanker following the hearing sometime this spring.

The new KC-46A Tanker adds increased cargo and aeromedical evacuation capabilities, which can provide potentially lifesaving capabilities in national disasters. Pease is in an ideal location to provide support to the nation and is close to critical refueling tracks for missions in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. The location allows for missions to be shorter, saving time and money and provides an outstanding value for the country.

“The public has shown tremendous support for the Shipyard in the past, and I would like to ask that they show the same support for our Air National Guard base,” said Mayor Lister. “Basing the KC-46A here ensures Pease will be a leader in our nation’s defense for the next generation.”

At this hearing, citizens will be able to offer their comments and support for the KC-46A refueling tanker verbally or in written form.

The Pease Air National Guard Base currently provides approximately $135 million to the local economy. The Air National Guard expects the KC-46A to Pease will add an additional $45 million of construction and $7 million in annual payroll to workers in the region.

“The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Pease Air National Guard Base have played a vital role in the development of Portsmouth and the Seacoast,” added Lister. “I look forward to supporting our Air National Guard, the KC-46A Tanker and the role the tanker will play in the future success of the region.”

The hearing will take place on March 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Eileen Dondero Foley Council Chambers of Portsmouth City Hall at 1 Junkins Ave., Portsmouth.
