Development News in Portsmouth

Portsmouth has been changing a lot this past year. There are several new developments in progress, many of which have garnered controversy and support from various factions of the community. All politics aside, we wanted to explore some of the latest news about the new construction and what it could mean for Portsmouth. Here’s our list:

  1. Portwalk: The Portwalk project is in its final phases, with new mockups for changes to be submitted for approval by early August. The hotel had its soft opening last weekend, and the rooms sold out on Saturday night. The influx of visitors to Portsmouth could mean big things in terms of stimulating the local economy
  2. Maplewood Avenue Bridge: The Maplewood Avenue Bridge is officially closed. The project includes a full bridge replacement and updates to the roadway, and the bridge isn’t expected to reopen until fall 2015. Until then you can find detour information here.
  3. Middle Street Bike Lane Project: Estimated to be finished in Spring of 2015, this project will implement designated bike lanes throughout the city. How exciting! Maybe Portsmouth will get on board with the Green Lane Project!
  4. Islington Street Bridge: The Islington St. Bridge is still closed. (We think they’re secretly turning Portsmouth into an island.)
  5. 3S Artspace: The 3S Artspace groundbreaking ceremony was a few weeks ago, and we can’t wait to see the new space! Portsmouth is already a diverse and artistic community, and 3S will only build upon that greatness. Keep up on the latest with their blog!
  6. Parkside: More luxury condos! But these ones are by the park. This new development is being brought to you by the Bean Group, and will feature waterfront views, desirable location, complete with decks and rooftop terraces all within walking distance to downtown activities.
