The Shadow of '76
The Shadow of '76
By Scott McPherson
In the quiet, still and cold
As gentle raindrops mingle in
The afternoon light, graying; old
Building seemingly firm, nearby
Reminding us of a time, when bold
Men talked of freedom, then
Made their stand; but woe
To them, who imperfectly
Laid this foundation; a foothold
Would keep the aspirants coming
Across those waters; easily sold
On the meaning more than the lies —
Who built this grand old hall
A century later — then the fix,
Seen, too late! It grows
Sinister as we're robbed blind
