Senator Kelly Ayotte and Benghazi

The only scandal about Benghazi is how Republican politicians played their own voters like puppets, and then the puppets conveniently forgot about being yanked around.

During the presidential election this fall, when Governor Mitt Romney was criticizing President Barack Obama's handling of foreign policy, we were told that what really happened in the September assault on the American consulate outpost in Benghazi, Libya, killing Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, was a scandal bigger than the Bush Administration's defrauding of the United States over Iraq.  Anyyone who wanted to see Romney beat Obama in the election was busting blood vessels in the neck over it.  Eyeballs bulging with red-veined sclera.  Red faced rage with jowls a-shaking and flecks of saliva flying: "Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi!  It's a conspiracy!  It's a coverup!  It's as bad as Watergate!"

After the election, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice was facing a possible nomination to the position of Secretary of State but Republican Senators Kelly Ayotte, John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Sue Collins successfully used the Benghazi affair to boggle Rice's chances at the State post. Following the dispatch of Rice, Ayotte promised she would still work diligently to get to the bottom of what really happened in Libya.  Then she tiptoed away from the issue.  We've heard nothing about it since, not from her nor any of the others.

Strike while the iron is cold and memories are stale?  "All the prosecutors are doing it these days!"  Nah.  Not really.

It's because the Republican senators were manipulating their own supporters to create a furor.  Republicans were had by their own people.  Senator Ayotte is not going to expose a scandal over Benghazi because there's no scandal to expose.  She was using her people as puppets in a shadow play - getting them all worked up for nothing bigger than a chance at electing another milquetoast Reaganite like her to the Senate while saying that the Benghazi assault was really something very nefarious coming from the Obama administration, like he was on the side of terrorists or something.

Oh yeah, they'll stoop.  They'll believe the worst when they already do.  Nazi, communist, Muslim infiltrator ... nothing is too ridiculous for some.

They were fooled.  It shouldn't be that easy, but it was.  That's not the mainstream media's fault.  It's theirs.  Wouldn't Republicans like to believe that their own people in office would be straight with them?  Perhaps desperation make us all gullible when it doesn't turn us into mountebanks.

Prove it wrong.  Get to the bottom of Benghazi.  I'd say it looks like we already did quite a while ago, and then Obama won reelection.
