Green Earth Baby Works Offers Eco-Friendly Alternative to Environmentally Toxic Disposable Diapers

By Theresa Conn

PORTSMOUTH — Are your child’s diapers eco-friendly? Single-use diapers have been causing considerable environmental damage since they became popular in the 1970s. An average child will go through 6,000 to 8,000 diapers in their first three years. That adds up to a construction dumpster’s worth of toxic plastic and human waste, all of which is doomed to spend from 250 to 500 years in a landfill.

Cloth diapers are a greener alternative to disposable plastic diapers. There’s only one cloth diaper service in New Hampshire: Green Earth Baby Works (GEBW).

GEBW offers a wide variety of environmentally friendly baby products, including different types of cloth diapers, accessories, and delivery services.

GEBW serves many New England communities; along with towns in the Seacoast and Greater Manchester regions, GBEW has recently expanded their service areas north to Portland, ME and south to Gloucester, MA.

Since they fell out of fashion in the 1970s, cloth diapers have been considered to be more time intensive, inconvenient, and dirtier than disposable alternatives. To help eliminate the negative stigmas and bring cloth diapers back into the market, GEBW offers different monthly service plans, a variety of products, and great customer support. GEBW even washes used diapers for their clients at a green facility that uses eco-friendly detergents and machines that minimize energy and water usage.

For only $25 a week, GEBW delivers 50 to 80 100 percent cotton diapers to its customers’ doorsteps. Used diapers are taken away to be washed and returned the following week. For the average child, GEBW’s green alternative can add up to as much as $2,500 in savings during the child’s first three years!

Green Earth Baby Works has an extensive Web site with useful tips, product information, and a gift registry. GEBW also has a retail store in Epping, N.H., which stocks a variety of diapers and nursing accessories. The retail store also hosts play groups and a knitting club.

GEBW is holding an event and several sales in November. On Nov. 2, it will feature a Cloth Diapers 101 class for new parents. On Nov. 9 and 10, there will be a used cloth diaper sale for families looking to upgrade their stash or sell gently-used diapers. On Nov. 1,2,15, and 16, there will be a toy sale — all Melissa Doug and Green Toys will be on sale for 25 percent off.

“I’m trying to make having cloth diapers as accessible as possible,” says Kim Leo, founder and CEO of Green Earth Baby Works. “I’m not into up-selling products or cutting corners. I want to find out what works for you, work with you to achieve that, while saving you money and helping the environment at the same time.”
