The earth has been through warming and cooling cycles since it's formation. No humans were hereRead More when the last ice age took place. Nor were any here when the earth warmed and the ice melted. Now all of a sudden, human activity is targeted as the cause for global warming just as it was being touted in the 70's as the reason for an impending ice age. Ecofreaks are pointing to the heat in North America this summer as an indication of global warming while ignoring the fact that in the southern hemisphere it's much colder than normal. NASA recently pointed to the melting of an ice layer in Greenland as an example of global warming. However, scientists who continually study the ice in that region fully expected the melting since it occurs on a regular basis every 150 years and this year's melting was right on schedule. If you do some in depth research on this subject you'll learn that the earth is indeed warming, but only 1% or less is attributable to human activity. Human activity never has, and never will, control or significantly affect the weather on this planet.........except, perhaps, in science fiction movies.

Brian is correct about the warming and cooling cycles the earth has experienced since the dawn ofRead More time, and before humans were around to make any contribution. On the other hand it is a simple matter of understanding how a spectrometer works to realize that adding photochemically active gases to the atmosphere must lead to a measurable effect at the receiving end (the surface of the planet). Further, the climate would indeed seem to be changing in accord with long-standing theoretical predictions. Though it seems to me 'climate change' is a more sound description than 'global warming' as we can easily admit to the first, given the empirical data, whereas the second is a more regional phenomenon, as Brian points out. But we so often miss the point with regard to climate change: What are we doing about it? Blaming is self-glorifying to all sides but this focus masks the real question, that is, if in fact climate is changing measurably, how are humans going to deal with its implications? What are coastal regions doing to prepare for already rising sea levels? What are continental farmers and ranchers doing to counter the potential for long-term drought? What are individuals doing to counter higher food and energy costs? Unfortunately in most cases the answer is 'nothing'. Not a particularly strong strategy. Quoting George Carlin "The Earth will be just fine... the humans are fu^*#d!" And Thomas Jefferson "Resort is had to ridicule when reason is against us."
