Ward officials saw record turnout during Tuesday's general election and here's how Portsmouth voted.
Question 1 8:00 p.m.: Many of the city's five wards were still open to allow voters who had arrived before 8 p.m. to cast their ballots. 7:50 p.m.: Ward 1 at New Franklin School was one of the busiest wards so close to 8 p.m. There was a long line of voters that stretched from inside the gymnasium to the front door. Volunteers were giving them candy, brownies and other snacks. Meanwhile, members of the Leftist Marching Band showed up and performed outside the polls. According to Ward 1 officials, 2,510 voters had cast ballots out of the ward's 2,970 registered voters for a nearly 90 percent turnout not including the dozens of absentee ballots that had yet to be entered into the voting machine. 7:30…

Columnist's post-election wrap up includes a mea culpa.
What I Got Right: The Electoral College numbers. What Else I Got Right: Not much. With very little time to process it and absolutely no time to dig through exit poll cross tabs, here’s what I saw last night. First, while I got the Electoral College vote numbers almost exactly right, I got the candidate completely wrong. As predicted, many swing states were close, but in the end almost everyone one broke for the incumbent. From a political analysis point of view, this is a surprise for many reasons. Traditionally, when the incumbent has approval ratings as low as Barack Obama’s, he loses. Traditionally, an election like this brings greater turnout from the opposition. Traditionally, late-deciders always break for the challenger. Tradition …
Democratic candidates won several national, state and local races on Election Night.
Portsmouth Democrats knew they had a good chance of doing well on Election night, but the overall results surpased even their expectations. For starters, President Barack Obama won his re-election campaign after he defeated Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Portsmouth's unofficial election results at the polls showed that city voters did their part by giving the president a strong victory in the city. Unofficial election results also showed that Portsmouth voters supported Maggie Hassan who was also elected New Hampshire Governor after she defeated Republican Ovide Lamontagne. But the good news for Democrats didn't stop there. New Hampshire and Portsmouth voters also supported Carol Shea-Porter's bid to regain the First …

Enroute to big Election Night win, city voters chose President Obama over Mitt Romney.
Portsmouth has always been known as a Democratic stronghold in New Hampshire and this proved to be the case when President Barack Obama easily beat Mitt Romney by a 2 to 1 margin. According to unofficial Portsmouth election results, Obama garnered 8.753 votes to Romney's 4,043 votes. Obama won all five city wards and it was never a contest in any of them. President Obama went to win a second term in the White House by winning 283 electoral college votes to Romney's 203 electoral votes. The key battleground state that put President Obama over the top was Ohio. This was not the first time Portsmouth voters supported President Obama. For example, results compiled by the New Hampshire Secretary of State's office in Concord show that in 2008 …

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

City saw President Obama and Mitt Romney several times during the past year leading up to Election Day.
President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney campaigned in New Hampshire multiple times during the 2012 Presidential campaign and Portsmouth and the Seacoast area saw both of them several times. As Portsmouth voters head to the polls on Tuesday morning to cast their ballots, they and millions of other Americans will finally decide who they want to occupy the Oval Office for the next four years. Now that all of the campaigning and political television ads are coming to a close, the final decision rests with each voter inside the voting booth. This is especially true for the so-called undecided voters that President Obama and Romney wanted to win over heading into Election day. What follows are some images of both men along with Vice President Joe…

GOP presidential hopeful, with special guest, 'rocks' the vote in New Hampshire.
MANCHESTER – Kid Rock got the party started, but the well-known 'Rebel Soul' singer was but an appetizer to the main dish of the evening. And when Mitt Romney took the stage, that's exactly what he did. He dished out anecdote after anecdote and zinger after zinger, all directed at Barack Obama and all in an effort to paint one final, lasting portrait in the minds of New Hampshire voters. "Do you want real change?" Romney asked a capacity crowd at Manchester's Verizon Wireless Arena. "Now, President Obama promised change, but he couldn't deliver it. I not only promised change, I have a record of achieving it." Romney, while toting his record of various business and political successes, hammered away at what he labeled the president's …

And Obama takes NH! I really don't think that Obama could have done this without the help of News Fish and Dumpy. Without them scaring off the centrist, by showing just how rabid extremists can be, I honestly think that NH could have been in play. So a tip of the hat to News Fish and Dumpy!   more ›
