Will NH Ron Paul Supporters 'Stand with Rand'?

Local liberty-minded groups and politicians say Rand Paul represents their values.

They turned out in force to back his father in 2012. Now, as they look ahead to the 2016 presidential election, Granite State liberty groups, Tea Partiers, small business leaders and several prominent Libertarian and Republican politicians are eyeing Rand Paul to fill the void likely to be left by his father, Ron Paul, who finished a strong second behind Mitt Romney in New Hampshire's First-in-the-Nation primary vote in 2012. Though he received his share of criticism from fellow Republicans, Randal Howard Paul, better known as "Rand," made headlines in recent weeks by taking a stand against potential domestic drone strikes with a roughly 13-hour filibuster on the U.S. Senate floor during the nomination of John Brennan as director of the …

GOP Legislators: Spend NH Highway Funds on Highways [VIDEO]

An amendment to a highway fund bill proposes to pull money from state trooper to road construction, in order to avert a gas tax increase.

State Rep. William O’Brien, R-Mont Vernon, and other Republicans in the NH House will propose a floor amendment to divert millions of dollars in highway funds from the state Department of Safety and other projects into direct road construction, in an effort to move up projects and derail a proposed 15 cent gas tax increase which purports to raise $1 billion during the next 10 years. Currently, revenue from an 18-cent per gallon gas tax as well as Department of Motor Vehicle fees are put into a state highway fund. Most of the $250 million-plus in that fund – increased to 73 percent starting in July – will go into road construction and repair. Another 27 percent is spent at the Department of Safety and other programs.  O’Brien and state Rep…

Horn: 'Put to Rest Forever ... the Party of Old White Guys' [VIDEO]

Newly elected NH GOP chair promises to take her party in a forward direction.

BEDFORD – Jennifer Horn's message was loud and clear. For the GOP to find success and regain a strong foothold in both the New Hampshire and national political arenas, Republicans must change their thinking and their tact. "We must put to rest forever the notion that the Republican party does not care, that we don't care about women, that we don't care about the elderly, that we don't care about children, that we don't care about the most vulnerable among us," said Horn. We must put to rest forever the notion that the Republican party is the party of old white guys. It is time to renew the GOP to the 'Great Opportunity Party.'" Horn, speaking to roughly 450 of the Granite State's most influential conservatives Saturday afternoon, promised …

Horn, Hemingway Vow to Unite NH Republicans

Jennifer Horn elected chairman of the NH Republican Committee.

BEDFORD – The gesture, at the very least, proved Andrew Hemingway was willing to walk the talk. The race to become chairman of the New Hampshire Republican State Committee has been hotly contested since Hemingway challenged former congressional candidate Jennifer Horn for the position in late November. Yet when the votes were tabulated at the conclusion of the state GOP's annual meeting Saturday afternoon at Bedford High School, and Horn had emerged victorious, Hemingway agreed to throw out all other votes in exchange for one, his. Hemingway stood at the microphone and cast an affirmative nod to his opponent, shook her hand and swiftly exited stage right. Horn thanked Hemingway and promised to work with he and other Granite State …

Ayotte: 'When We Stop Fighting Ourselves, We Win'

NH GOP leaders call for party to unite behind new chairman.

The vote on the next chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Committee party was still hours away, but the message among local GOP leaders was clear. "When we stop fighting ourselves, we win," said U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte. Ayotte joined former congressman Frank Guinta, outgoing NH GOP Chairman Wayne MacDonald and hundreds of Granite State conservatives at Bedford High School for the New Hampshire Republican State Committee Annual Meeting on Saturday morning. Most agreed the party is split among traditional New Hampshire conservatives and a younger, more liberty-minded sect of Republicans, a reality played out in the race to become the next leader of the state committee. Indeed, the election between former congressional candidate Jennifer …

Pantelakos Blasted for 'Stand Your Ground' Statement

Andrew Hemingway, candidate for NH GOP chairman, calls for the removal Portsmouth State Rep. Laura Pantelakos as chair of the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.

A candidate for State Republican Committee chairman is calling for the removal of Rep. Laura Pantelakos as chair of the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee after he said she berated voters during a hearing on the "Stand Your Ground" bill on Tuesday. Andrew Hemingway, one of three candidates for NHGOP chairman, issued a statement on Wednesday night saying that Pantelakos, D-Portsmouth, told some voters, "Show some respect for the members of this committee. We are forced to sit here and suffer through this…I am not going to tolerate this!” Hemingway criticized Pantelakos for speaking this way to New Hampshire voters who had traveled from as far away as Coos County to address House Bill 135, a measure that seeks to rescind a …

NH GOP Wants Obama to Repay Portsmouth

State Republican Party Committee Chairman Wayne MacDonald says the City Council was perfectly justified in seeking reimbursement of more than $30,000.

Obama for America officials may have given the Portsmouth City Council the cold shoulder when they rejected their request to repay the city more than $30,000 to cover the police, fire and public works costs of President Obama's Sept. 7 campaign event, but state Republicans say the White House should pay up. "This is the epitome of the fiscal cliff debate in Washington. The President and the Democrat party feel they can spend, spend, spend without any consequence or ownership," said New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Wayne MacDonald in a prepared statement on Thursday. "When the campaign raised hundreds of millions of dollars, this is what we expected they would spend it on. It is unfair to burden the City of Portsmouth and …

Mike Huckabee Rallies NH Republicans Behind Mitt Romney

Past differences aside, former Arkansas governor says it's time to eye common goal.

Prior to serving as keynote speaker at Wednesday's New Hampshire GOP Victory Dinner in Manchester, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee insisted to members of the press that there is no bad blood between he and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. "You know what? Four years ago, we were opponents in a race. This time we are on the same team to see a new direction for this country," said Huckabee. "There's a lot of things that happen when you are running with and against somebody in a primary, but it's not about anything personal between Mitt Romney and me. It's really about our country, and quite frankly, you know, Mitt has worked hard. He's the nominee by having earned it. And he has my absolute and total and full support." "No," …
