Firefighter Hurt Battling Downtown Blaze

Several businesses and apartments were damaged in a blaze in downtown Portsmouth Sunday.

One firefighter was injured. No occupants were hurt.

The fire broke out at 38 Daniel St., which houses The Eye Glass Shop. That business sustained heavy damage. Several apartments in the building were also damaged.

Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to surrounding buildings. Fire Chief Steve Achilles said crews were "outstanding," overcoming sweltering conditions. It was about 82 degrees and extremely muggy when the fire broke out at about 4:30 p.m.

The injured firefighter was from Kittery, Maine. He suffered a shoulder injury, Achilles said.

The fire started on the second floor of 38 Daniel St. The cause was unclear, Achilles said.

The damaged building and apartments were uninhabitable, Achilles said.

More than 60 firefighters and about 20 fire vehicles helped put out the blaze.
