White Heron Opens New Cafe on Islington Street

The store has more than 60 varieties of coffee and tea, along with free WiFi.

White Heron's new cafe in the city's West End opened for business Thursday.

White Heron Tea and Coffee Community is located at 601 Islington St.

Store manager Pia Bickford said the store features more than 60 varieties of coffee and tea imported from all over the world. Meats, bread, fruit and vegetables come from local farms and are organically certified, she said.

"We don't sell coffee that is more than two weeks old," Bickford said. "We try and do as much local sourcing as we can."

She said the store saw a steady stream of West End residents all morning who were excited the store opened after a year of development.

The store's construction was overseen by local restaurateur Jay McSharry, owner of Jumpin' Jay's Fish Cafe and Moxy.

More than 20 people work at the store, according to Bickford. There is free WiFi. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. More information can be found on the White Heron Tea and Coffee Community website.
