40-Foot Barge Sinks in Piscataqua River

The barge ran aground in the waters off New Castle.

A 40-foot barge sank in the Piscataqua River Saturday.

One person was aboard the barge when it ran aground at about 4:30 p.m. in the waters off New Castle near the Kittery Point Yacht Club, according to Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Matt Burt.

The individual escaped in a boat and was uninjured, Burt said.

The Coast Guard placed a boom around the barge to protect against possible fuel leakage. A tug boat was called to help pull it out of the water.

It was immediately unclear why the barge ran aground.
