Rye Native Studying Abroad Goes Missing in Rome

John Durkin, 21, was last seen on Wednesday night.

A Rye native who is studying abroad in Rome, Italy went missing this week.

John Durkin, 21, a student at Bates College and graduate of The Governor's Academy in Byfield, MA, went missing two days ago. 

According to a Facebook page set up by his cousin, Brian Durkin, John Durkin was last seen by his friends in Campo dei Fiori at Sloppy Sam's bar around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. He is a student of the Trinity College Program in Rome, and the program director filed a report with the local police the next day. He hasn't been seen since. A Twitter account has also been set up to draw attention to the search.

John Durkin is 6'1" tall and weighs about 210 pounds, with brown hair and an athletic build. He goes by both John and Johnny, according to his cousin.

John's uncle is reportedly in Rome now, meeting with police and the US Embassy. His father is also on his way to Rome.
