Downtown Portsmouth Fire Causes More Than $750K in Damage

Scores of firefighters helped extinguish the fire.

A blaze in downtown Portsmouth Sunday caused more than $750,000 in damage to businesses and apartments.

Fire Chief Steven Achilles said that figure could rise even higher after damage assessments are made.

The fire broke out on the second floor of 38 Daniel St., which houses The Eye Glass Shop and several apartments. The building was uninhabitable, Achilles said.

No occupants were injured. One firefighter from Kittery, Maine was treated at the scene for a shoulder injury, Achilles said.

Investigators on Monday were still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

An adjoining building that houses The Clip Joint and The Banks Gallery was also damaged. Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading even further. Fire Chief Steve Achilles said crews were "outstanding," overcoming sweltering conditions. It was about 82 degrees and extremely muggy when the fire broke out at about 4:30 p.m.

More than 60 firefighters and about 20 fire vehicles helped put out the blaze.
