New Southgate Plaza Diner Taking Shape

A local restaurateur is restoring the old Monarch Diner.

A new diner planned for the Southgate Plaza is taking shape.

Local restaurateur Roger Elkus is restoring The Monarch Diner and renaming it "Roger's Redliner Diner." The Monarch Diner operated in Dover from 1950 to 1968.

Elkus raised about $14,000 though a Kickstarter campaign for the project. An electric sign for the diner was installed over the weekend.

Elkus operates the group of Me and Ollie's cafes on the Seacoast.

Earlier this year, he turned one of his cafes in downtown Portsmouth into a burrito restaurant but closed it a few months later. The space is currently up for lease.
